Art Biography
‘The dominant themes that emerge are the capacity for these subjects to transform and change painting into something that is both magical and operatic through the use of costumes, lighting and sets.’

Gerard’s work is largely influenced by experiences of working in the theatre linked to a series of theatrical fine art residencies with The Birmingham Royal Ballet, Opera North, Northern Sinfonia. These pieces are reflections of Shakespeare, poetry, myth (in its most generic sense). The dominant themes that emerge are the capacity for these subjects to transform and change painting into something that is both magical and operatic through the use of costumes, lighting, sets etc.
Gerard studied for his Master’s degree at the University of Northumbria but lived in Cambridgeshire for a number of years and he frequently travels to London and Europe which has been central to the development of his work.
Most of his paintings are acrylic on canvas which combines the spontaneity of watercolour with the sturdiness of oil paint. Acrylic dries fairly quickly so he can generate an immediacy within the work as it progresses, so the paintings retain the element of freshness that he is always trying to capture. These technical experiences have enabled him to participate in demonstration classes for magazines, books, workshops. Gerard’s works have been showcased widely across the UK, mostly across the South and in London galleries
